Summary
Y. Shaya Fainman's current research interests are in optical network systems and devices with special emphasis on ultrafast information processing with optical nonlinearities and use of femtosecond laser pulses, near field phenomena in optical nanostructures and nanophotonic devices, quantum communication, and multidimensional quantitative imaging. He is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at UCSD and is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America, Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Fellow of the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers, and recepient of the Miriam and Aharon Gutvirt Prize. Dr. Fainman has contributed over 200 manuscripts in referred journals and over 350 conference presentations and conference proceedings. He was a Chair IEEE/LEOS sub-Committee on Optical Interconnects and Signal Processing, 2004-2006 and a General Chair, OSA Topical Meeting on Nanophotonics for Information Systems, 2005. He also served on numerous conference program committees, organized symposium and workshops, and between 1993 and 2001 served as a topical editor of the Journal of the Optical Society of America: A on Optical Signal Processing and Imaging Science. Dr. Fainman received a Ph.D. from Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in 1983.
